The Details:

Huguenot Flatwater is a paddlers dream but not exactly ideal for folks looking for wade fishing access. The boat launch and surrounding trail system includes a stretch of river access for about a half a mile, but there is dense tree cover that makes casting a challenge, especially in the summer months. However, if you do have a boat or rent one for the day, this is the place to learn, as there aren’t any rapids upriver and plenty of rocks to stop and have a picnic on and explore. The typical fishing adventure at this location usually takes anglers upriver about a mile to Bosher’s Dam, which also serves as a natural stopping point for the day, as you can’t really get around it. The faster, oxygenated water below the dam provides excellent smallmouth fishing opportunities, along with the occasional catfish and gar.

I haven’t personally had a ton of success fishing between the dam and takeout here, but I know people who fish it frequently from the secret “fish camp,” and report steady smallmouth action. Because the water is moving so slowly, it’s hard to know where to locate fish and prioritize your time. My best recommendation would be to fish with small, Rapala crank baits or top water to cover water quickly and find the fish that are spread out. In the heat of the summer, try fishing the shaded banks or go with a jig and fish it deep. I’ve also found there to be a lot of smaller fish, both smallmouth and sunfish, so don’t be disappointed if that’s your experience, too.

If you’re looking for adventure, a fun place to spend part of your day is the island just upriver from the boat launch on the north side of the river. Pack a lunch, fish the side creek, and have yourself a “beach day” right here on the mighty James River. Stick around for the sunset, and you won’t be disappointed, especially if you’re throwing top water. This spot has a special place in my heart and served as my current fiance and I’s first date 10 years ago! Enjoy the paddling and send us your photos.

Local tip: Paddle upriver and spend your time fishing below the dam…this spot can be really good!

If we were stuck with one lure: Whopper plopper or any top water lure to cover ground and open water, which there is an abundance of at this location.
