Smallmouth bass
The James has always been known for its smallmouth fishing, and while the numbers may have changed over the years, there are still plenty of opportunities to strike gold!
From May to late June (and sometimes even late summer) the James becomes a trophy striped bass fishery. We are lucky to welcome these aggressive bass each spring.

Don’t overlook the largies. The James is home to an abundance of largemouth bass, especially in the lower section going east toward Petersburg.
Largemouth bass
Often called a poor man’s tarpon, these sea-run fish put up a fight and help kick off the season each spring. If you’re in for nonstop action, don’t overlook these hard fighting fish!
